Penguin encounter at Simon’s Town

On my way to Simon’s Town.

One of the things I remember most about Cape Town is the stunning landscape. An overabundunce of natural beauty. Among the places I explored combined with my passion for landscape & wildlife is the Boulder’s & Foxy Beach. Never in my life, and certainly outside Antarctica, did I imagine that I could get so close to these adorable creatures. While at the train on the way to Simon’s Town, which is an hour away from the city, I could not help but wonder how much I would see. The area where I saw the penguins for the first time consist of two interconnected beaches. One is the Boulder’s Beach, where it is supposedly possible to swim with them. Something I coudn’t do at that time because the water was so cold.

The other is the Foxy Beach where I saw the entire colony from a constructed boardwalk. The place required an entrance fee though. There were hundreds of them. All fury and extremely cute. They seemingly enjoy posing for the cameras. And I could see them everywhere. Either behind bushes & rocks or basking in the sun beside the walkways.

Here are some photos taken at the beach as well as Simon’s Town.

Cute overload!! The penguins are so adorable. I love that they are roaming around on the beach, not stuck in a zoo.

  2. I love Penguins! They are so cute and when they walk, stop, tilt their heads then continue walking, you just wish you could grab one cuddle or take with you. It is great to see them free and not locked away in a zoo or in an aquarium. I love that you can get close enough to take good shots!

The first time I saw Penguins at Sea World, Orlando and then several times in a zoo. But I bet, nothing can beat the experience of seeing them in their natural habitat!

OMG so cute!!! I love love penguins a lot! Weird fact, I used to think penguins were as tall as humans. I was in my mid-20s when I first saw a live penguin in a zoo in Japan and I was so surprised at how small they were!

Penguins are so cute! We are also looking for more affordable ways to see them in the wild. Right now going to Antarctica is not an option for us. I didn’t realize South Africa is an option. Are they only there at certain times of the year?

Oh those penguins are too adorable! And Boulders Beach looks so pristine! Were you allowed to get close to the penguins and interact with them?

    1. lancekerwin@msn.com says:

      Hello Therie,
We can only get close but not touch because they can bite you.
